The Chancellor of Sydney University, Dame Leonie Kramer, AC, DBE, will discuss Can we believe what we read? at a University of Queensland free public lecture on Thursday, September 11.
Dame Leonie will deliver the E.J. Goddard Oration for 1997 at the University's Schonell Theatre at 8pm.

Dame Leonie has been Sydney University Chancellor since 1991. She has held positions in a range of organisations including chair of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, National Institute of Dramatic Art and Operations Rainbow Ltd.

'Information technology has brought many benefits but how much information can we absorb, and how do we know that the information we receive is accurate?' Dame Leonie said.

'There's a good deal of disenchantment with the media, upon which so many people rely for information. Yet information is not knowledge, and opinion based on imperfect information has no value.'

The annual lecture honours Professor Ernest James Goddard, founder and dean of the University's Dentistry Faculty. He was also dean of the Science and Agriculture Faculties.

The University has organised the event in association with the Australian Dental Association (Queensland).
