UQ shortlisted for multimedia excellence award
A University of Queensland CD which is being used by some of Australia's future vets, doctors and scientists has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award to be announced this week.
University senior lecturer in biochemistry Dr Paul Reilly said the CD, which visualises how cells harness the energy content of nutrient chemicals, was proving popular with students since its introduction this year.
"We really designed it for undergraduate science students to illustrate a basic scientific process," Dr Reilly said.
"However, students from other programs including veterinary science and the Graduate Medical Course have been keen to use it to improve their scientific knowledge."
The CD has been nominated for the prestigious Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing to be announced on June 3 at the Australian Publishers Association Book Fair at the Sydney Convention Centre.
It lets students see the process from the physics, chemistry and biology angles by using multi-media publishing options like funky graphics, high quality audio and video (including microscopic video footage of the enzymes in action) and hyperlinked text.
The CD results from a joint collaboration by Dr Reilly and the University's Educational Multimedia Service. The University's Teaching and Learning Committee headed by Professor Andrew Lister funded the project.
Dr Reilly said that subject to funding, team members hoped to add a test bank function to the CD to examine students'knowledge.
