University ceremony marks National Week of Prayer for Reconciliation

A ceremony for the National Week of Prayer for Reconciliation will be held at the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus on Wednesday, June 2.

University of Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit director Michael Williams said the ceremony was intended to raise and maintain the University community's awareness about reconciliation.

"We see it as an important event in the University's life and one which we hope will be continued beyond the formal legislative life of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, in the spirit of it being a people's movement," Mr Williams said.

The ATSIS Unit and the University's Chaplaincy are collaborating to convene the event, which features songs, stories and prayers, for the third year running.

University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay, staff and students, church representatives and members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community will join in the ceremony.

The ceremony will be held in the amphitheatre near the University lakes from 5.30pm (or in the Parnell Building in the event of rain). Members of the public are welcome to attend.
