UQ staff ready to help students at TSXPO

University of Queensland staff will be at TSXPO ( Tertiary Studies Expo) in Brisbane this month to assist prospective students to make important life decisions and sort their way through the tertiary information maze.

They can advise about the University's range of course and subject offerings, including new courses for 2000, and give advice on entry requirements and applying for courses. TSXPO will be at the John Reid Pavilion, RNA Showgrounds, Bowen Hills on Saturday July 10 and Sunday July 11 from 10am to 4pm.

"TSXPO is a good opportunity for people to sample the range and depth of University of Queensland courses, and to ask questions about everything from accommodation, admissions, course content and quotas, to special facilities," University Academic Registrar Neville Lamb said. "The University offers the State's widest range of high-quality courses, with more than 5000 subjects available through 400 undergraduate and postgraduate courses."

Mr Lamb said the University of Queensland, Australia's 1998-99 University of the Year, was unique in Queensland, providing degrees in disciplines such as agricultural science, veterinary science, dental science, oral health, speech pathology and food technology. As well as structured professional courses, degrees such as Arts and Science, which could be tailored to student interest, remained popular with first-year students.

He said faculty staff and representatives from University colleges and UQ Sport would attend TSXPO.

Mr Lamb said the University was experiencing strong demand for its range of dual degree programs, one of the most comprehensive of any Australian university. "Dual degrees are increasingly popular because they give people two areas of specialisation and consequently better employment prospects," he said. "They take one year longer than the longest component of either degree. For example, it normally takes four years to do a law degree and three years to do an arts degree full-time, but a dual Arts/Laws degree takes five years."

Mr Lamb said TSXPO also provided a chance for students who were unsure of their QTAC course preferences to get advice about their applications.
