Study hots up over summer at UQ

From film and television studies to philosophy, languages and physical fitness, the University of Queensland Summer Program this year will offer something for everyone.

Program co-ordinator Mardi Hardcastle said this summer UQ would provide three different programs - an Academic Summer Program, language courses through the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) and community education courses through the Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE).

"The Academic Summer Program allows people to study undergraduate and postgraduate University subjects, most of which normally take at least one standard semester to complete," she said.

"More than 100 subjects will be offered by 30 departments, including business and law, government and public administration, journalism, meditation, science summer projects and maths, sociology, and history."

While the Academic Summer Program runs between December and February, commencement dates and duration of subjects vary. Enrolments close Friday, November 5.

Internet enrolment for the Academic Summer Program is available via SI-net to UQ students who were enrolled during 1999. The URL for these enrolment is: http://www.studentinfo.uq.edu.au All other students can use the enrolment form in the Summer Program Handbook.

Ms Hardcastle said Community Education courses in the program provided a great opportunity to sample university study without the pressure of exams and assignments. Students could experience class room study, practical workshops, seminars and field excursion in general interest areas covering art and music appreciation, photography, story telling and speed reading.

The University's Institute of Modern Languages will offer summer language courses for beginners and intermediate students in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Indonesian Italian, Japanese and Spanish. High school students are especially catered for and there are exciting new programs such as Il Cinema Italiano and Surfing the Net in German for levels two to five.

Summer Program handbooks with details of the academic, ICTE community education and IML language programs will be available late September from Student Centres on campuses, Customs House, Queen St, City or by phoning (07) 3365 2600. The Handbook will also be available on the UQ web site, www.uq.edu.au
