Olympic stars to splash down at Open Day

10 September 2004

Athens Olympic swimming Gold medallists Libby Lenton and Leisel Jones will be special guests at the UQ Aquatic Centre Open Day this Sunday, September 12.

Fresh from their success in Athens, Lenton and Jones will be on hand to give insights into their Olympic experience, answer questions and sign posters for youngsters.

The appearance by the Olympic stars will be a highlight of a family fun day at the UQ Aquatic Centre.

The annual Open Day is a fundraiser for Surf Lifesaving Queensland and lifeguards will be present to do water safety and CPR demonstrations.

The day will also include free learn to swim classes and swimming, two huge inflatables in the pool, a sausage sizzle, jumping castle and big swimwear sale.

UQ Aquatic Centre Manager Jae Marr said the aim of the day was to help families enjoy a safe summer.

“It is important children learn to swim as the Queensland summer rolls around,” said Mr Marr.

“Swimming lessons help children develop lifesaving skills and confidence around water and ensure the whole family enjoys their next summer holiday.

Mr Marr said the benefits of learn to swim classes went beyond safety skills.

“Safety skills are a primary reason why many people initially enroll into lessons but swimming is also extremely good for the development of your child” Mr Marr said.

“If you have a young child who is acclimatising to the water, you don’t want them to miss out on valuable parent/child bonding experiences in the pool”.

Visit the UQ Aquatic Centre this Sunday September 12, check out one of our free classes and continue what many parents find a most rewarding, fun and intimate experience with their child.

The Open Day will be from 11am to 3pm, with Libby Lenton and Leisel Jones appearing from 1pm.

Entry will be free, with a gold coin donation to raise funds for Surf Lifesaving Queensland.

All paths can lead to agriculture

There’s no single road into agriculture. For some, it’s a career passed down through generations. For others, it’s a path they discover later, drawn in by the science, a desire for sustainability or a chance to make a real difference.
