More than 130 University of Queensland Ipswich students are set to graduate at a mid-year ceremony at the Ipswich Civic Hall on Monday, July 14 at 6pm.
University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Alan Rix said the option for mid-year graduation was gaining in popularity due to the flexibility and career opportunities it offered students.
Professor Rix said the campus was looking forward to the graduation celebration with the students, and wished them success in their future pursuits.
He said graduation ceremonies provided an important opportunity for students to be acknowledged for their academic achievements.
“The University has provided valuable resources for students to expand their knowledge and experience and now it is time for them to move onto new challenges,” he said.
The graduation ceremony will see students graduate from every faculty at the Ipswich campus, including Arts; Business, Economics and Law; Health Sciences; and Social and Behavioural Sciences.
Federal Member for Blair and UQ graduate Shayne Neumann will be guest speaker for the event.
Third-year student Darren Sibson is counting down the days to the event, as he will graduate from his Business Management and Business Communication dual degree.
Darren, who majored in Events Management, Marketing and Public Relations, moved to Ipswich from Far North Queensland to study in 2004.
Since that time Darren has excelled in his studies, participating in a university-organised mentor program that allowed him to assist in the planning of the 2008 Masterclass Weekend at the Hilton.
This culinary event will see chefs and winemakers from around the world gather to offer expert instruction in their fields.
Darren said he found the Ipswich campus to be very welcoming and has seen a campus culture begin to grow during his time.
“I’ve seen more and more people choosing to study at UQ Ipswich because of the learning environment and technology, not just as a backup for other campuses,” he said.
Also set to graduate at the Ipswich ceremony is Bachelor of Nursing student Kirilee West, who is moving into a graduate position at the Princess Alexandra Hospital later this year.
Kirilee said she felt fortunate to have studied at Ipswich as she was able to work in small groups under the close direction of clinical lecturers.
She said the practical experience she amassed during her study was invaluable and allowed her to liaise with other allied health students.
“I honestly had the best experience in the nursing program with teaching staff who taught us to stand up for ourselves, to be better nurses and to be better people,” she said.
