It may be the middle of winter, but that isn't stopping members of the UQ Gatton community from making a splash in the new pool.

The new UQ Fitness and Aquatic Centre - The Gatton War Memorial Pool, is run by UQ Sport and includes a 25m heated pool and cardio and weights room.

UQ PhD student Diogo Costa has been swimming laps in the pool each night since it opened last month.

“It is fantastic that UQ Gatton has this wonderful new facility,” Mr Costa said.

“The weights, cardio equipment and the new pool will be great for boosting the health and fitness of the staff and students on the campus.

“It also provides another place to socialise on campus too, we can pack a picnic and have it on the grass while we swim in the pool."

The facility is open to UQ students, staff and the local community.

UQ Sport Venue Operations Manager, Wade Hurst is looking forward to the pool becoming a place for friends and family to enjoy.

“We encourage the local community to come and use the facility. We have disability access and we also have a BBQ on site for people to use,” Mr Hurst said.

“Soon we will have swimming programs, including aqua fitness, squad training and learn to swim lessons.”

The new facility is open to the community and opening hours are Monday to Friday 12pm–8pm, Sunday 2pm–7pm and Tuesday and Thursday morning 6am–9am.
