The University of Queensland's student recruitment manager now has a unique perspective to offer potential students - she has just finshed being one.

Dr Jessica Gallagher, who will be awarded her Doctor of Philosophy at the 6pm Faculty of Arts graduation ceremony on Wednesday, July 16, said like a lot of students, it was with an overwhelming sense of achievement and a great feeling of relief to finish her studies.

Dr Gallagher’s thesis, Der neue deutsche Film ist türkisch explored the representation of Turkish immigrants in contemporary German cinema and was completed under the supervision of staff from UQ’s School of Language and Comparative Cultural Studies.

“I began my PhD in 2002 after completing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours I) from UQ,” Dr Gallagher said.

“The support and expertise offered by the School of Languages and the UQ Library made my choice to continue research at UQ an easy one and it also gave me the opportunity to tutor German language and cinema courses which I enjoyed immensely.

“I was fortunate to receive a travel grant from the Australian Universities Europe Network which made possible a research trip to Germany to access archive and script collections and speak with well-known film studies academics at the Freie Universitat Berlin.”

As student recruitment manager, Dr Gallagher is responsible for the face-to-face promotion of the University to prospective students, parents and school contacts.

“In this role, I have the opportunity to meet and speak with a wide range of students and parents from Queensland and interstate,” Dr Gallagher said.

“Parents in particular are sometimes concerned about job and career prospects in the humanities field but in today’s global society, degrees such as a Bachelor of Arts provide endless opportunities.”

In recent weeks, UQ has formally announced the introduction of bonus ranks for students who have studied a language other than English throughout years 11 and 12.

“Students who have successfully completed a LOTE subject will be eligible to receive up to 2 bonus rank points which will be added to their OP,” Dr Gallagher said.

“The introduction of this scheme emphasises the value of knowledge and skills obtained through studying languages.”
