Clean Up The World Chairman Ian Kiernan to give Duhig Lecture at UQ
Clean Up Australia and Clean Up The World chairperson Ian Kiernan will speak on Saving the Environment - A Business Opportunity at the 20th annual Archbishop Sir James Duhig Memorial Lecture at Mayne Hall, St Lucia, on August 3.
The lecture, hosted by the St Leo's College Student Club and sponsored by the Sheraton Brisbane Hotel and Towers, will be chaired by former Queensland Premier and member of the College Council, the Honorable Mike Ahern.
Mr Kiernan AO, the 1994 Australian of the Year, is best known for founding Clean Up Australia, the annual campaign to rid waterways, parks and roadsides of rubbish, in 1990.
It proved so successful Mr Kiernan was in 1993 invited by the United Nations Environment Program to manage and promote Clean Up The World, which last year included 120 countries.
Mr Kiernan has received many prestigious awards, including the Toastmasters International Communications and Leadership Award (1997-98), and the United Nations Environment Programme Sasakawa Environment Prize (1998).
A successful yachtsman and chairman of the Sydney Olympics 2000 Bid Community Relations Committee, Mr Kiernan was in 1997/98 named among 100 leading Australians as a National Living Treasure.
The lecture was inaugurated to honor Archbishop Sir James Duhig, a late Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane and St Leo's College founder, who served on the University Senate for 54 years.
Each year a prominent Australian is invited to speak on an aspect of the theme for the series, "The Cultural Development of Australian Society."
