The University of Queensland has appointed Mr Warren Sturgess to spearhead its fundraising and development activities from Monday, August 23.
Mr Sturgess was formerly the Head of Strategic Development for Anglican Church Grammar School "Churchie" where he was instrumental in raising the fundraising operation to one of the most successful of its kind in Australia.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Trevor Grigg said Mr Sturgess' record in raising funds for facilities at Churchie was outstanding and he believed his expertise in identifying potential philanthropic funds would be invaluable to the University.
"Mr Sturgess comes to the University to join an energised team committed to securing the financial future of this world-class institution," Professor Grigg said.
"In circumstances where adequate funding from non-government sources is pressing as never before, his expertise in securing individual philanthropy and corporate sponsorship will be invaluable."
Prior to leaving his previous position, Mr Sturgess raised $5 million in five years for the School's new Stanley and May Smith Science Centre which will open this weekend.
Professor Grigg said Mr Sturgess would be working to form close partnerships between community and corporate bodies, university alumni and the university's teaching and research staff.
Married with two daughters aged 11 and 12, Mr Sturgess was born and raised in Chinchilla before attending Churchie. After a brief stint at the University of Queensland, he gained his Bachelor of Business Management (Marketing) from QUT in 1988.
A keen runner and horse-rider, he lives on acreage in the Redland area where the family have three horses.
