September 30 is the closing date for Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre applications for students wishing to attend University of Queensland courses in the Year 2000.

University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay said students planning to attend university next year should consider following in the footsteps of Australia's most successful graduates. They should make UQ their first preference.

"The University of Queensland stands alone as the first choice of students, employers, industry and government," he said. "It is a world-class university that attracts the best students, produces highly sought-after graduates and conducts research that is acclaimed internationally."

Professor Hay said year after year, UQ attracted more QTAC first preferences than any other tertiary institution in the state. Being considered the ultimate place to study also meant that UQ attracted most of the brightest students. Last year, UQ enrolled 78 percent of Queensland school leavers who had achieved the elite OP1 ranking. The University also attracted the majority of the State's Australian student prize winners this year.

"One of the reasons UQ is so well regarded is that it backs its reputation with outstanding results," he said.

"The latest survey of new graduates shows that University of Queensland graduates continue to have outstanding success in gaining full-time jobs or progressing to further study.

"Following the University's 1998-99 Good Universities Guides Australian University of the Year award for positive graduate outcomes, the University has again this week obtained the best graduate outcomes in the State."

Latest figures show that 85.4 percent of UQ graduates under the age of 25 looking for full time jobs had found them within four months of completing their degree. This compares with the Queensland average of 81.9 percent and the national figure of 79.6 percent.

The Graduate Careers Council of Australia survey also casts a glow over the UQ as a place of further learning with 34.3 percent of these under-25 graduates going on to full-time study compared to 22 per cent nationally and 20.1 percent for the whole of Queensland.

QTAC application forms for Year 2000 students can be collected from QTAC or from the University's St Lucia, Ipswich or Gatton campuses or other participating institutions.

Current Year 12 students can apply to QTAC using their Telephone Application Service. Other applicants can apply in person or through the Internet.
